Being unboxed today is doll dc-725 from the Barbie Creatable World line. This line features a new body design and is marketed as something that is slightly more customizable than the standard Barbies as, in addition to different outfits, it comes with two alternate hairstyles. A short default haircut and a long wig. The dolls sell between $30-$40CDN.

The dolls have also received quite a bit of publicity due to being of indeterminate gender, meaning that kids can decide if they want their doll to be a male or female character (or neither). Some people have called this the non-binary Barbie, but based on the height difference between this doll and standard Barbies, it seems more like a pre-pubescent one. Either way, if you’re looking for a Barbie-line doll without the exaggerated chest or Barbie or Ken, this fills that gap.

Dc-725 has dark hair and dark skin: there are several other hair and skin colours available.

In addition to the wig, this doll comes with three pairs of shoes/boots (converse-style, loafers, and cowboy boots), a pair of camouflage trousers, a tulle skirt, a short sleeve top, a long sleeve top, a varsity-style jacket, denim shorts, glasses, and a shoulder bag (in the style of a reusable shopping bag more than the style of a handbag).

The doll has 13 points of articulation, which makes it more pose-able than a standard Barbie, but lacks some of the rotational abilities of the Made to Move line.

Having come to fashion dolls from the highly customizable BJD world, I was enthusiastic for a customizable Barbie, but I came away somewhat underwhelmed. The long wig has a very obvious wig line that’s less than ideal, and since that’s the only non-clothing custom element I thought it was a shame it wasn’t better quality (although I did think the microbraids were nicely done).

Overall I think this is a cute doll, and if you’re looking for a play line fashion doll with a younger or less gendered look than a standard Barbie or Ken this definitely fulfills that. I just wish there had been more customizable features.
I’d had great plans for at least five other posts this year (reviews of two Barbie releases, a modern versus vintage Cabbage Patch doll post, a vintage Star Wars post, and a travel-related tourist dolls of Vietnam and Cambodia post). But I suppose they’ll all have to wait for 2020!
If you’re celebrating Christmas this week, I hope it’s a happy one! 🎄
And if I don’t post again until January, Happy New Year! 🥳jSariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13091297532711995227noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6443729619692022416.post-10954862912469249432019-08-06T05:33:00.002-07:002019-08-06T05:54:17.950-07:00The Fresh Dolls Mia from Positively Perfect

I vaguely remember reading some reviews of the Fresh Dolls line back in 2017. While I did think about picking one up, since I was on a semi-hiatus when it came to toy collecting at the time, I never got around to it. Fast forward two years, and while checking out the toy selection at Dollarama (the Canadian discount chain), I noticed three different Fresh Dolls on the shelf. Remembering my earlier interest, I picked one up.

The Fresh Dolls line are a fashion doll (11.5"/29.5cm) brand within the World of EPI umbrella who previously brought us the Positively Perfect line of 14.5" (37cm) soft-bodied dolls for toddlers. The Fresh Dolls line consists of seven jointed fashion dolls, each of which is differentiated by their unique outfits (a range of formal to casual) skin colour (a range from medium to dark that's described on the official website as "deep mocha, caramel, latte, and even blended") and hair colour/texture (smooth to curly, long to short, and blonde to black). There has since been a release called The Fresh Squad, which consisted of three male dolls, also fashion doll size.

The particular doll that I picked up ("Mia") has curly hair, medium-dark skin, and wears a patterned jumpsuit and faux-leather jacket. This doll is one of the basic releases and originally retailed for $10.99USD, but the Dollarama price was $4.00CDN. The deluxe releases originally retailed for $17.99USD.

Let's take a closer look!

The basic release dolls are packaged quite simply. with a cardboard back and front plastic shell. The doll is attached to the shell with elastic at the waist and feet, which makes her surprisingly easy to remove from the packaging.

Free from the shell, but still on the card.
Her delightfully springy hair expanded when the plastic shell came off.

The doll has 9 points of articulation: neck, shoulders, elbows, hips, knees. The knee and elbow joints are hinge joints, which limits her posing somewhat, but the hip and shoulders are ball joints.
The plastic of Mia's body is lighter and harder than an otherwise similar Barbie doll. This gives the doll a a hallow feel when you tap her limbs.

Free from the box and posed for a walk.

The outfit is very lightweight, and while I love the faux-leather feel of the fabric jacket, the jumpsuit (which is a very thin fabric) feels like it might rip easily. The sandals are made of a flexible vinyl, and the doll is also wearing hard plastic, gold-coloured ball earrings.

Seated.

Compared to other playline fashion dolls, the additional jointing is a nice feature at this (original) price point (standard Barbie Fashionistas are only slightly lower priced and lack the elbow and knee joints), but the cheaper-seeming plastic construction (and fabric of the outfit) makes me wonder how well these dolls would hold up to play.

A parting glance.

Some of these dolls are still available for the original prices on the official website, but as I've frequently seen them at much lower regular prices at Dollarama in Canada and Big Lots in the US, I would definitely say that at those prices these dolls are a wonderful value.

Creating a new line of playline fashion dolls that will compete directly with Barbie (as these do) is always a challenge, and I think this line has done a reasonable job of creating a doll that's distinct but still looks at home with other dolls of similar size.

I don't know that this line will ever see an expansion, both because the increasing diversity of Barbie offerings leaves less of a gap in the market, but they company does still attend major toy events, so we'll see. And if they do, I'll be excited to see what they release!

If you've picked up one of these dolls (or one of the Positively Perfect dolls) I'd love to hear about your experience!jSariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13091297532711995227noreply@blogger.com18tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6443729619692022416.post-69826883252565040972019-07-14T08:56:00.000-07:002019-07-14T08:56:19.069-07:00Funko POP Constantine DC Super Heroes 255 (Free Comic Book Day Edition)

So when Hellblazer main character John Constantine started showing up in both the TV series Legends of Tomorrow and in the DC Animated Universe, I naturally readied myself for a stream of new merchandise. And while there's certainly been some (as my archives can attest), there hadn't been a Funko figure until just a couple of months ago.

It was much to my irritation that the figure ended up being released as a limited run edition of 20,000 (sold in comic shops on Free Comic Book Day, 4 May, 2019), because while I'm happy with my one Pop of Constantine, with a minor paint job, the design would also be perfect as Pete Wisdom (a Marvel Comics character with a similar style but with black hair and coat). And while I'd be happy to customize a regular release, the idea of paying extra for a limited run figure just to turn it into something else just isn't something I'm comfortable doing.

But either way, let's take a look at this one!
Overall, I'm very pleased with this figure. I often find human characters to be a little underwhelming in POP form, but this one definitely captures the essence of Constantine. I just hope that someday they release a regular edition as well!jSariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13091297532711995227noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6443729619692022416.post-89633831895208298722019-07-08T07:08:00.002-07:002019-07-08T07:08:51.640-07:00Barbie Fashionista #121: blue dress & prosthetic leg

As promised in my post about Fashionista #133 (the new release with the wheelchair) weekend before last, today I'm unboxing Barbie Fashionista #121.

Fashionista 121 is distinguished from the rest of the line by her prosthetic left leg. Unlike 133, who came on a multi-jointed body, this doll has the standard five points of articulation that most of the Fashionistas have by default, however there is some rotational movement to the hip on the left leg that we don't see in the standard bodies (or on the right leg of this doll). Some dolls in this line are noted by being shorter, taller, or chubbier, but (leg aside) this particular model is on the standard height/size body.

This doll is in a medium skin tone and has long brown hair and green painted eyes. Her accessories include a sleeveless sweatshirt dress, hoop earrings and white flat shoes. Her prosthesis is an above-knee one, and seems to be sculpted to resemble one with a microprocessor-type knee. I'm mildly surprised that they went with an above-knee style, since below-knee amputations are so much more common, but either way it's an interesting design.

Let's take a closer look!

I have to confess, I love the idea of this doll far more than I love the execution. I'm still glad she exists, but having seen prosthesis wearing amputee character dolls from Monster High (like Vandala and Hexiciah) with far more interesting designs, I couldn't help but feel a little underwhelmed here. But to be fair, a big part of that might just be how unimpressed I was with her outfit.

In any case, I love that a doll with a prosthetic leg has become part of the Fashionista line and I'm happy to have her in my collection! If you've picked her up, I'd love to hear what you think.jSariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13091297532711995227noreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6443729619692022416.post-67257566725740893912019-06-30T06:57:00.001-07:002019-06-30T11:29:11.385-07:00Barbie Fashionista 133 & her blue wheelchair

Earlier this year I saw the announcement that the Barbie Fashionista line would be adding three dolls featuring visible disabilities: Two in wheelchairs (both in the same outfit, but one white with her blonde hair down and one black with her shorter hair up) and one with a prosthetic leg (in a medium skin tone and a different outfit). As someone who specifically looks for disability representation in children's/playline toys, I knew I'd be bringing at least a couple of these home. Today I'm opening up #133, one of the wheelchair-using dolls.

This doll is currently retailing for just under $15CDN online and locally. And while that is higher than the average price for most dolls in the Fashionista line (which usually retail for $10-$12CDN), considering the size and detail of the wheelchair and the fact that this doll comes on a much more elaborately articulated body, I was impressed that she isn't being sold at double the price. Considering the additional cost of Monster High's wheelchair-included doll, and the extra cost of wheelchair accessories for American Girl type dolls, I was pleased to see that this doll will be affordable for a wide range of families.

Now let's take a closer look!

The front of the box.

Front view.

Aside from the chair itself, one thing that distinguishes this doll from most of the Fashionista line is the wonderfully articulated body. Most Fashionista dolls have a simple body with five point articulation, but this doll has the flexibility of the made-to-move line.

Quarter-side view.

Aside from the wheelchair and ramp, this doll also comes with a flair-sleeved shirt, jeans, sunglasses, and a watch. There is also a doll-stand-type holder attached to the chair which keeps her in place.

Compared to the wheelchair given to the last "wheelchair Barbie" (actually called Share-a-Smile Becky), this one is leaps and bounds ahead in terms of design. I appreciated that they skipped the armrests this time around and kept the backrest low, given the action positions this doll can take.
.

Closer view of one wheel.

The brakes do move and can be placed over the wheel, <strike>but they're not actually strong enough to stop the chair from rolling if it's on a hill</strike> (ETA: I was wrong about that - they just need to be clipped over the wheels). While I think this chair is overall much nicer than that of Monster High's Finn, unlike that chair, the casters on this one don't pivot (they do roll).

A parting glance.

Overall, I have to say that I'm very impressed with both the amount of detail and realism on the chair (especially at this price point), and with the packaging overall. I think this is a lovely addition to both a child's collection and a collector's shelf, and I just hope that Mattel keeps wheelchair-using dolls in their line for longer this time around!

I hope you're having a wonderful weekend (and a wonderful holiday weekend if you're in Canada)! If you've picked up any of the dolls in this line, I'd love to hear what you think of them. I'll be back with a post on the Fashionista with the prosthesis in a week. :)

I noticed the existence of Fraggle Rock Funko Pop figures while watching one of YouTuber Lawn Gnome's Funko review videos. My first thought was that I should try and pick one (or two, or more) up. But then I remembered that as children, my sister and I had several of the plush Fraggles and the plastic Doozers that were released in the early '80s during the tv series' original run. And because of that I realized that there were probably old Fraggle toys still living in my mother's basement. And indeed I found some!

In 1983 Tomy released a series of four wind-up Doozer figures, of which I had two. Each one had slight variations in their hair and features (and helmet colours), and each came with a removable tool belt. Apparently most of the figures that show up on the second hand market are missing those belts. Luckily enough both seem to be complete with their accessories and in complete working condition. So let's take a closer look!

I was browsing Mandarake (the Japanese second-hand chain) looking at doll outfits the a few weeks ago when I came across a listing for a YoSD Tinatsu (also called Chinatsu, but I'll be using the former since it's what appears on her paperwork). While I debated buying her, she sold. But a few short days later another Tinatsu was listed, this one at 3000¥ less because her eyes had been swapped and were no longer the default brown. Since I can't resist a good deal, I decided to add her to my cart.

Unlike some of their larger dolls, there are no standard dolls in the Yo-SD size (26.5cm), so all of the releases have been limited run for the various Dolpas ("doll parties") and other events.
There were two versions of Tinatsu released, the first in 2006 at two August Dolpas, and the second in 2007 at Dolpa 18. The doll I picked up is from the second release.

Being unboxed today is a non-licensed (but clearly brand-inspired) figure from SooSoo Toys. SooSoo Toys produces 1/6th scale multi-jointed action figures (the same scale as both the similar style Hot Toys figures and standard Barbies). Their bodies general have between 15 and 17 points of articulation, generally come with multi-piece fabric outfits, and retail in the range of $130-$160 USD.

The figure I bought is named "Paranormal Detective" but is clearly meant to be the DC Comics character John Constantine. The box art and head sculpt are very clearly designed to resemble Matt Ryan, the actor who plays the character on the TV series "Legends of Tomorrow" (and who played him in the short-lived series "Constantine" and who voices the same character in the animated films "Justice League Dark" and "Constantine: City of Demons"). If you've followed the blog for a while you'll know that I'm always drawn to Hellblazer/Constantine collectibles.

There is, of course, a bit of a moral question when it comes to picking up a figure like this since it is very clearly labeled in a way that avoids having to pay licensing fees. I definitely see the issues there, but at the same time have picked up low-end knock-offs in the past, so I decided that I don't really have a real personal stance on the issue. Your mileage may vary.
This was my first experience with a SooSoo Toys figure in person, and I have to say that I was very impressed with the quality. The pose-ability of the figure, the detail of the clothing and accessories and the likeness of the head all exceeded my expectations. While I'm still a bit conflicted about such an obvious likeness being non-licensed, I can't deny the impressive work!jSariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13091297532711995227noreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6443729619692022416.post-60650857939530999802019-01-27T08:16:00.001-08:002019-01-27T08:16:59.531-08:00DC Comics Bombshells The Batwoman from Funko's Rock Candy line

Being unboxed today is the final figure that I mentioned in my "incoming toys of 2018" summary, A vinyl figurine of Batwoman (in her DC Bombshells form) from Funko's Rock Candy line.

The Rock Candy line is a series of 5 inch/13cm character figures which are more detailed and more proportional when compared to the Funko Pop line. T line was originally dedicated exclusively to female characters (at launch the tagline was "<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d110c; font-family: "Open Sans";">“the most powerful women around" and consisted of superheroine and Barbie characters). The line has since expanded and some recent releases in the line have been male. Each single-piece figure comes with a clear circular stand.

I mentioned the DC Bombshells version of the DC Universe characters when I reviewed my Tonner Batwoman Doll, but for those who are unfamiliar with the sub-brand, these are essentially 1940s-style pinup versions of the characters.

The figures are generally offered for sale at prices between $10 and $15 USD.

Let's take a closer look!
Overall, I quite like the extra detail that these figures have compared to the similarly sized (and priced) Pop line. That said, I don't think they have enough appeal on their own to drive me to go out of my way to pick up much of a collection of them. If I buy more it will be because they're characters that I'm specifically interested in rather than because I'm drawn to the line itself.

Still, if you're looking for vinyl figures that are slightly larger than Titan's and slightly more detailed (or less stylized) than Funko's own Pop line, these are a nice line to fill that gap.

Do you have any of these Rock Candy figures? What do you think of them?jSariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13091297532711995227noreply@blogger.com16tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6443729619692022416.post-14864976248099493252019-01-18T09:18:00.002-08:002019-01-22T06:52:54.114-08:002018 in Review - Doll and Figure Entrances and Exits2018 was quite a dramatic year for me personally and included relocating back to Canada. As a result, I ended up selling and donating more dolls and figures than I have in years. But let's start with the dolls and figures that joined us!

In February, I was joined by Disney's Couture De Force 20th Anniversary Esmerelda from Hunchback Notre Dame. When I first posted about her I hadn't planned to keep her, but in the end she stuck around.

In March, I picked up a figure that I intended to keep, but ultimately ended up returning in the form of Kotobukiya's ArtFX Star Wars Poe Dameron & BB-8 from the new Star Wars trilogy

In the fall, I picked up a few block figures as well as DC Super Hero Girls Roller Derby Bumblebee.

And finally was one figure that I haven't reviewed yet, Funko's Rock Candy Batwoman (dedicated post to come within the next month or so).

On the outgoing side I bid farewell to a few of my larger (and smaller) BJDs. The last one to leave (I sold him the week before I left Texas) was my Loongsoul XuanYan.

Leaving just before him was my Limhwa Half-elf.

And prior to her was my Fdoll Charlotte (she never received a full review, but you can see her mentioned in this 2014 post about unfinished dolls

And perhaps most surprisingly I sold the doll that's been my comment profile photo for several years, Dollzone Alpha.

Some non-BJDs also made their way out, including Hearts for Hearts Surjan who found a new home with fellow blogger Beth from Dreaming of Dolls.

Also making their exists were a number of toys that I donated to various organizations before leaving Houston which included Canterwood Crest Breyer horses, Madame Alexander's Travel Friends Namaste, Hiccup from Spinmaster's How to Train Your Dragon line, and a few other random toys.

And that just about covers all of the entries and exits from 2018! I don't have a sense of what direction I'd like to take my collection this year, so it will be interesting to see how things go.

I hope you've all had a wonderful New Year's celebration (if you celebrate) and wish you all the best for 2019!
If you ever scroll far enough back to my first few posts on this blog, most of the photos in those posts are of BJDs in the garden in my house in Burlington, Ontario. It's been five years since I've lived there (it was rented out while I was living in the US), but this past summer we decided to sell the house. As of yesterday, the house is now in the hands of its new owners.

The week before closing I took my Lumedoll Atik along and shot a few final doll photos. I wish I could have photographed him from a few other angles, but unfortunately his faceup was damaged during our relocation up from Houston. The weather is too damp to redo his faceup right now, so he'll have a "good side" until the summer.

These photos aren't as good as the older ones as I was using my phone (if you'd like to see some of the older photos, check out Dolls in the Snow or Dolls in Springtime) but I wanted to commemorate the event regardless.

As I was outside, snow started to fall, which added to the mood.

Being opened today is a playline doll from the Roller Derby release of the DC Superhero Girls by Mattel. This doll is the last of the three toys that I picked up at the Samko/Miko warehouse sale in Richmond Hill, ON last month.

I've talked about the action figure versions of the DC Superhero Girls before, but this is my first time picking up one of the fashion doll-type releases. While the action figures are more in-line with my general tastes, the dolls do have a charm that I think can cross over between both fans of the figures and fans of playline fashion dolls.

The gimmick of the Roller Derby Roller Derby release is that each doll comes with a pair of rollerskates, a helmet, and a sportier version of their standard outfit. In Bumbee's case this included moulded bright yellow socks, which limits the versatility of the doll but does mean that the socks won't droop with play (which does tend to be an issue with playline - and even some collector - dolls).
I remain charmed by the idea of the DC Super Hero Girls, but I don't know that I'll be picking up more of the dolls (as opposed to the action figures). That said, as a gift for a child, I think they're more than reasonable!

And that's it for today! I hope you've had a great November! I had these photos taken in mid-October and had every intention of having this post up the day of Halloween. What better day to post a werewolf, right? But I promptly forgot about that, so now it's better late than never!

Being unboxed today is another block figure in the form of one from Mega Construx/ Mega Blox' Monster High line, the werewolf Clawdeen Wolf. These figures have two more points of articulation (for seven points of articulation in total) than the WellieWishers of the same style, and two fewer than the Assassin's Creed line (The AC line is aimed at the 14+ collector market, while the MH and WWs are marketed primarily for the child market). Interestingly, these figures have the least amount of sculpted detail to their faces of the three.

The figure comes packaged with a simple half-block stand, a bracelet and mirror accessory set, and a multi-block stand that requires assembly. The stand was not particularly sturdy or attractive, so I was unimpressed by that addition.
And that's a quick look at Clawdeen! If you're familiar with the line or have any of the larger playsets, I'd love to hear about your experiences with them.
And even though I'm two weeks late, I hope you had a happy Halloween!

It's been a complicated summer, which is why I've been away. I'll probably post details in my annual wrap-up at the end of the year, but in the meantime let's get back into the toy chest!

I'm staying in Toronto at the moment, and I recently visited the Samko/Miko toy and children's book discount warehouse that's north of the city. While I was primarily there to pick up books as gifts for friends, I did pick up a three toys for review. The first of the three is an American Girl WellieWishers mini block figure from Mega Construx (a version of Mega Blox).

These figures normally retail for around $8CDN, but at the warehouse they were on for $2CDN. So of course I had to bring one home! I was tempted to pick up Ashlyn (since that's the full size doll I own), but I wasn't a fan of the way her long hair translated to the block format. So instead I brought home Kendall.

Let's take a closer look!

While we were there, I had a chance to pop into AG Place NYC (which is in a new location while the original is under construction). I thought I'd share some of my photos from that visit.
All of these photos were taken on the lower floor with the historical dolls. I would have liked to have taken some photos of the modern dolls on the ground floor, but it was much too crowded for any of those to have turned out (the Black Friday Sale was happening that weekend, so it was packed).

I hope you enjoyed joining me on my trip! :)

Up for today's unboxing is the two figurine set of Star Wars' Poe Dameron and BB-8 from Kotobukiya's ArtFX line. I've had mixed experiences with Kotobukiya's figurines. I loved the single-piece figure of Tali from Mass Effect from their Bishoujo line but was disappointed by the assembly-required Hawkeye from their Marvel Now line which fell apart within hours of opening it.

I've been cautiously enthusiastic about the Star Wars line: the amount of detail on this figures is impressive, but the fact that they have the same multi-piece construction and magnetic base as my Hawkeye figure worried me. But then a sale + a gift card overruled my caution and I brought this one home.

The PVC figures are 1/10 scale and are labelled as a "model kit" rather than as a statue or figurine, which I found interesting. While the Poe figure does require assembly, BB-8's head and body are held together via magnet, which worries me (I can imagine it falling off and getting lost easily).
Overall, I'm quite pleased with these two. The level of detail is brilliant. And while I'm still not 100% sold on magnetic rather than pegged bases, I was pleased to see that these figures have stronger magnets than my older Hawkeye figure.

While I don't know that I would have picked them up at retail price (this set is generally listed around $90USD), I certainly can't complain.

Do you have any Kotobukiua figures? And are they in solid or multi-piece style? I'd love to hear about your experiences!

While I've never been a big Disney collector, so many of my friends are (both real life friends and online doll/figure collectors) that occasionally I get swept up in their enthusiasm. One recent case of this was the number of people I've seen collecting the Couture De Force resin figurines, which led to me picking up their Esmerelda figure, which was released to mark the 20th Anniversary of The Hunchback of Notre Dame in 2016.

I've always thought that Hunchback was such an odd candidate for a Disney adaptation, and so even though it wasn't a completely successful movie I've always had a soft spot for it. Perhaps it's because it was so oddly-themed that there's relatively little merchandise out there for it (I've long said that I'd love to buy a villain-themed snow globe that plays the Hellfire song). Seeing this pop up, I decided to give it a try.

This figurine, in line with most of the Couture De Force line is 8 inchces/20cm in height. The retail prices on the various figures in the line range between $44 and $90 USD, and Esmerelda landed right in the middle at $66USD. The marketing promises that "faux gems, encrusted crystals and opalescent paint bring each sculpture to life".

Having seen reviews for some of the other figurines in this series I was excited to see this one in person. And while it's certainly a pretty figure I was disappointed over all.

Front view.

From a viewer's perspective, the most glaring issue is that the figurine's face sculpt doesn't actually look like the animated version. The sculpt is pretty, but if not for the signature dress she doesn't actually look like Esmerelda. In a low-priced play doll that would be fine (if not expected), but in a figurine at a much higher price point it just seems sloppy.

Back view.

From a display perspective, the detailing on the dress is lovely. The sculpted and painted details are wonderful, and the semi-translucent, glitter-embedded scarf was great fun to photograph outside. The "faux gems" look a little silly up close, but from a distance they're acceptable - and when the light catches them there's a certain added charm.

Side view.

That said, the resin of this figure is incredibly light. Picking this figure up, I was reminded more of the resin animal figurines you can buy at Dollarama for $5 (and that's $5CDN!). If this were a line selling at half the price (perhaps in the range of $30USD) I would be less bothered, but for the actual price I wanted something more solid.

Given my issues with the weight and the lack of facial likeness I'm not sure this is a figure I want to have on display. I've been debating keeping her just because of the relative rarity of Hunchback merchandise, but since I'm trying to get away from collecting figures that I don't want to display, I'm not sure I'm going to keep this one. We'll see!
If you're a collector of the Couture De Force line, how have your experiences been? Are other facial sculpts more like the characters? I'd be curious to know!jSariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13091297532711995227noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6443729619692022416.post-65782554797706118182018-02-05T18:34:00.001-08:002018-02-16T08:38:45.604-08:00Out of the Box: Cabbage Patch Kids "Taylor Audrey"

A few months ago I'd been thinking that I was wishing I'd brought one of my old (mid-1980s) Cabbage Patch Kids dolls back home with me after my last visit to my mother's place. In a fit of nostalgia, I discovered the wide variety of sizes, constructions, and styles of new CPK that are now available.

A few casual searches later, and I found a listing for a "cowgirl" variation on sale. While the store listed her as being short-haired and dark-skinned, the doll that I received turned out to have long hair and the medium skin colour. While someone looking for a look-a-like doll for a child would probably have been disappointed, that was ultimately a neutral for me since my main goal was just to see what one of these new P'tits Bouts De Choux (sorry, the Canadian in me couldn't help it) would be like.

Incidentally, while this doll has fibre rather than yarn hair, the original style yarn-haired dolls are still available. They seem to be about twice the price though!

Overall I was fairly impressed with this doll. I should note that she was priced at $30USD, while many other Cabbage Patch Kids of the same size (but of different lines) were two to three times that price. So while I think she was certainly worth the price, I don't know that there would be enough added value to these dolls to go for one of the higher end ones.

Have you picked up a CPK lately? Or do you have fond memories of the originals like I do? I'd love to hear about them either way!

I'd gotten out of the habit of blogging regularly last year, but I'm hoping to get back into the routine of posting at least twice a month for 2018. I'm already getting off to a slow start since the month is already half over, but hey - better late than never, right?

As with 2016, I'd planned to spend 2017 streamlining my collection. And while I did buy fewer dolls and figures overall, I also only sold three dolls (and zero action figures) over the course of the entire year (down from the 18 figures and three dolls that I sold in 2016). But enough about the numbers, let's take a look at the toys who entered and exited over the year!

In terms of collecting, I'm going to try not to add any additional large dolls this year. I have already picked up a first action figure of the year, but I'm planning to reorganize and cut back in general. During the first part of this year I'm hoping to sell a few more dolls.

In terms of blogging, the first few upcoming posts will be catching up. Even though I haven't been posting, I have been taking photos. And I recently realized that I have a few saved photos going back to late 2016 that I haven't posted, so all of that will be going in the queue. I'll also be doing a post or two dedicated to the dolls that I'm currently selling on various forums. And since I was able to visit AG Place NYC when I was in New York last month, I'll also be putting up my photos from that trip.

I hope you had a good end of 2017 and beginning of 2018! I'm hoping to get caught up with everyone else's updates soon.

Back in April I picked up one of the little Funko mystery boxes from their X-men line. I photographed the unboxing and promptly forgot about both the figure and the photos. But now that they've turned up, how about a quick photo post (a final photo set from my old back garden too)?

Unlike some of the other franchise mystery minis that Funko has produced, the X-Men figures are extremely simple. Since I'd picked up one of the much more detailed Fallout figures immediately prior to this one I was disappointed with it, but for anyone who appreciates a more stylized figure this might well be a winner.

As is standard for Funko's Marvel-license products, this figure is a bobble head. And as with most of these style of figures, that wobbling head is the only point of articulation.
Before I get to the dolls, I thought I'd let you know that my house stayed dry during Hurricane Harvey. I was out of the country (my five day trip to visit family in Belgium ended up doubly extended), but my husband and the dog were in town - one of our cars was flooded, but other than that we were lucky.

And now on to the dolls!

It's been almost two years since people started reviewing the then-new Made to Move multi-jointed Barbies. At the time I'd been planning to pick one up at some point, but I'd never thought it would take quite as long as this!

But last week I found the "Soccer Player" edition on clearance, and since I can't resist a bargain I decided to bring the doll home.
I know it's been said many times by now, but for a doll at this price point, Made to Move Barbie is such an impressively engineered piece. I can't believe it took me so long to bring one of these home!
