Retro Week: A Tale of Ice Storms and Vintage Figures

Bingo Beaver, Optimus Prime, and ET are cold and wet.
As happened a couple of years ago in December, last week I got to "enjoy" a Toronto ice-storm.  While that made it hard to go anywhere, it did give me a great excuse to grab some toys from the basement and take them outside for some photos.

For this round, I brought out a larger ET figure (this one with 5 points of articulation, unlike the solid mini-figure we saw the other day), a return visit from Transformer Optimus Prime (who was one of the stars of our first Retro Week two years ago), Bingo "Bet it All" Beaver, from the Get-Along-Gang, and finally a smaller figure in the form of the Care Bears' Tenderheart Bear.

ET realizes that a clever alien would have worn
clothes to the ice planet.
The Get-Along-Gang's Bingo Beaver is ready to shake
your hand (since I also located his box, he's going
to get a solo post some time in the future).
Tenderheart bear climbs the ice wall.
Optimus Prime gives us a wave (which would be
more obvious if he still had hands, but hey).

If you've seen any of my past Retro/Toronto visit posts, you might
recognize this as my usual photo spot: it was so icy that there was no
way I was going out the back door, so this is the end of that tradition!

A final parting shot from the group.
And that's it!  I'm back in Houston now, but I still have a few more photos to share from the basement, so those will be posted later this week.  And how about you all: any stories about toy photography in extreme weather?

  1. Fun! I did some of my Snowboard Spidey back in 2014: http://super-dupertoybox.blogspot.com/2014/02/snowboard-spider-man-by-toybiz.html

    1. That's awesome! It's making me wish I'd found the old Barbie ski set that my sister had - good idea for next time though!

  2. I've never taken any toy pictures in extreme weather, and living in NE Ohio, we've had our share. Fortunately, we live on the west side of Cleveland, which gets far less snow than the east side, due to Lake Erie. However, that picture out your back door looks all too familiar.

    1. That makes sense about the different sides of Cleveland. The night of this storm I went to dinner with a friend who lives in The Beach (a neighbourhood closer to the lake), and she commented that the roads and trees in her area were fairly clear.

  3. Hi JSarie! Those little guys are really brave. Though it is true that ET should have thought about wearing some clothes, since he doesn't have any fur, unlike the Tenderheart bear (all bears have fur).
    Keep having fun!

  4. Great little figures! I am tempted to start a collection of those vintage posable Care Bears. I don't think I had them growing up, but I love them. :) I usually love taking doll photos out in the snow, but we really didn't have any snow at all this year! So weird for my area. I'm glad you had a nice taste of winter while in Canada (even thought it's spring, lol, but as a Canadian, I am sure you know what I mean!)

    1. This ice storm aside, they did have a freakishly warm winter overall (and it was hotter than usual all the way down here in Houston too), so I'm not surprised about your lack of snow - I like to say that I miss it for the photo opportunities, but not for the shovelling. ;)

  5. Oh quickly take them inside, they must be freezing their little buts off! They are all so cute JS, love the beaver with his little teeth. :) He reminds me of the old Ipana toothpaste ad, do you remember Bucky?

    1. Heh, sometimes those hot days must fog up your camera a bit, right? ;)
