Clearance Shopping at Hancock Fabrics

I'd actually never heard of Hancock Fabrics (a US fabric and craft chain) until someone on the American Girl Collector's forum mentioned that they were going out of business - a quick search told me there was one not too far from me, so I decided to check them out.

The place was in chaos, so I actually didn't realize how reduced some of the items were - as it turns out, all of their pattern packets were selling for $1.25.  Not realizing that was the final price I only picked up a couple of things, but now I'll definitely need to go back - and if you live near one, it might be worth checking out!

Two of my purchases: patterns for outfits for AG-size dolls,
and for plush mermaid and pirate rag dolls.

What with Joanne's, Michael's, and other such places, you do have some great fabric and craft places in the US.....however I'm sad to hear that this one is closing down.

    1. It is a shame that this one is closing down, but it's so true that the number of these places is wild - there's another neighbourhood that I visit for shopping once a week that has four craft mega-stores on the same street!

    1. Too bad that you don't have a local one anymore - the sales are brilliant.

And I'll have to add these to my project update list now! :)

    2. You keep a project list? I really should, but it would be a mile long.

    3. Heh, I have to - otherwise I'd just keep starting/buying new things and forget about the ones in the queue! ;)

  5. Hi JS,
It always makes me feel sad when I learn that a fabric store is closing down. We used to have several really nice small stores, but the big chains built those big barns and put them all out of business. It's such a shame because once they have a hold the quality of the fabric AND THE CUSTOMER SERVICE quickly declines.

Still it's nice that you managed to bag a few bargains.
    Hugs,
    X

    1. Yeah, it is too bad - This place actually is/was a big chain, so maybe there's some karma at work there, but it's still too bad for the employees.

Selfishly though, I can't complain about the bargins!

  6. Cute patterns. I especially like the one on the left with the winged costumes. I've been to two of the Hancock's in my area and found some great 1:6 scale stuff. I'm on the hunt for the Adirondack chairs Vanessa says she spotted in one store.

    1. Nice! Mine seemed to have already sold off everything other than fabric, patterns, and thread - I probably waited to long to check it out.

I hope you're able to find those chairs!

  7. I was in there yesterday and yes I makes me soo sad. The have always had the best fabric. The never found a seller so the business no longer exist! The sales people are still in high spirit and still provide the best customer services. The closed all the under performing stores first and now the remaining stores will close in 6 weeks.

    1. It's definitely a shame for the employees - and I hadn't realized it because I've only lived here for a year, but apparently they were one one the few places around here to carry much in the way of clothing-type fabrics (apparently most of the other fabric stores are quilt-focused), so that's going to be a real gap in the market.
