A Tale of Terrible Packaging

The outer box.
This isn't quite toy-related, but it's close enough:  I've been a little weak with getting posts out these past two weeks, in part because I went on holiday (I spent a little less than a week doing site-seeing in Boston), but mostly because my entertainment time has been eaten up by the mid-November release of the latest instalment in one of my favourite games franchises, Dragon Age: Inquisition.

The game itself I've been impressed by.  It's a solid RPG (although there are still some issues that need patching) and has plenty of lore for people who love the world-building,  but the packaging of the collector's edition was quite possibly the least competent professional packing job I have ever seen.  I'm not generally a fan of CE releases either, and this set is certainly not making it more likely for me to buy any others in the future).

The box itself looks great (and exactly like a chest that appears in-game), but upon opening it I found this:
Everything had a slot, yet everything was loose inside.

Two of the chess pieces were all broken (surprisingly, nothing else appeared to be damaged):
The damage
I'm not terribly upset by the breakage (I really only wanted the tarot set, fabric map, and the box itself, and luckily those items met my expectations), but I was shocked to see such poor package design on a release like this.
A sampling of the tarot cards.

  1. A shame that things got broken, was it sent by mail? The tarot cards look great, the artwork is beautiful. Have fun with the game :-).

    1. Thanks! :)

It was sent by mail, and that does always increase the chances of damage, unfortunately.

  2. That's a shame that it was packaged so poorly. But at least you got what you wanted the most. I hope you have lots of happy hours playing!

    1. That's the bright side! And I am enjoying the game itself, so I can't complain too much...

  3. Love those tarot cards - very art deco. I would have been royally ticked if my stuff arrived like that.

    1. Yup, I admit to raging a bit at first over the damage - I'd actually wondered to myself what I was going to do with those items, so at least the breakage ended that debate for me!

  4. Bit of a bummer, I don't think I would have been quite so understanding. Do you think it was the packaging or poor handling by the postal system? They have a rather devil may care attitude about shipping at times. Still at least what you wanted was okay, and those cards are fab!

    1. Unfortunately, I think it was probably a combination of the two - rough handing, plus poor packaging.

Still, I'm happy with the rest, so it's all good (although I'll certainly hesitate if I'm tempted by another similar collection in the future).

    1. The cards are fabulous, so I'm happy with them. I'm thinking of having some matted and framed together - I just have to decide which ones will make the cut! :)

  6. While it would be nice if mail carriers were more considerate of the packages they deliver, I think the responsibility rests first with the seller. Make sure that the package is secure, that's just basic.

The design of the box and the cards and the pieces look great though. Congrats on getting it.

    1. Thanks!

I agree that it's primarily the seller's (or producer's) who is at fault here - and I know I'll be cautious about ordering this kind of set from either of them in the future.
