Out of the Box: Mass Effect's Tali'Zorah (Kotobukiya Bishoujo)

Tali'Zorah watches for Geth (or Cerberus, or Reapers)...
I've shared a number of Mass Effect figures from a variety of lines in the past, but one thing I've been on the fence about are the Kotobukiya's Bishoujo figures.  For those who aren't familiar with them, the Bishoujo line produces figures that the "sexy lady" version of a variety of female game and anime characters.  They have Kotobukiya's usual great level of detail, but the sexy poses always struck me as a little silly, so I passed on the earlier Mass Effect releases from the line (Liara and Jane Shepard) - but I've regretted not picking up the Liara figure since then (she is available on the secondary market, but at ridiculous mark-ups, and I'm just not willing to pay $250+USD for a figure that originally retailed for less than $80).  So when the Tali figure was announced I decided that silly or not, I'd probably pick her up.

And fortune smiled on me, because not only did I find her in stock recently, but also at a 20% discount!  She arrived on Sunday, so let's open the box and take a look at her.

First off, I have to say that I love the packaging - the box itself has three windows (front, top, and one side), but is still very sturdy, being made of a fairly thick cardboard.  The use of colour in the labels is an interesting mix of the Mass Effect theme colours (black, grey, red), and that of Tali's multiple shades of purple outfit.

The inner plastic packing slides out easily, and separates just as easily.
The inner packaging.
Unlike the Kotobukiya Marvel Now series figure I own (Hawkeye), Tali comes in one piece, and is solidly attached to her stand. As with all the figures in this line, she is non-articulated and make of vinyl.

Side view. Surprisingly for a Bishoujo figure, they
didn't give her enormous breasts - I guess they'd have
gotten in the way of her rifle!

Rear view (insert joke here ;)).

Overall, I have to say that I love the amount of sculpted and painted detail that went into this figure.  For all  my worries about silliness, she's much less over-the-top than the average Bishoujo figure, so I'm glad I got over my worries and picked her up.

  5. I don't play this game so am not familiar with the characters but the figure is gorgeous. I really love the pose but I know what you mean about some of those poses being over the top. But this one is quite feminie but still very tough looking. I love the colours of this figure too.

Ack, I hear you on second-hand market mark up prices. I have this problem with Integrity dolls. The older ones I liked used to retail for $90 but on the secondary market, they go for $350+. It's so crazy.

    1. Prices can be so crazy, can't they?

I'm curious: which Integrity dolls are you watching for? Maybe they'll pop up at a low price someday (we can always hope, right)?

    2. She was released before I started collecting the IT dolls but I've been watching for Day Tripper Poppy Parker. When she was released (fully clothed with all her accessories), she retailed at $99 I believe. The lowest I've seen her come up for is $300 nude. IT dolls have crazy secondary market prices. I was really lucky when I managed to get my two Monsieur Z girls as I got them below retail from a seller in my country and they had never been opened/removed from their packaging, but that's been the one and only time I've been that lucky.

    3. Oh, she's the one with the very light hair and the flipped-up hair style, right? I can see why you like her - although I wouldn't want to pay more than three times the price for the nude doll either! If I ever come across her I'll think of you now. :)

I've been pretty lucky with IT in that the one doll I was looking for post-order period (Handsome Devil Damon) wasn't quite so popular.

  6. She's really cool! I love her "movement", in that even thought she's sculpted, you could have a lot of fun posing her. Beautiful colors and detail!
