Out of the Box: Monster High Hexiciah Steam

Mattel generally puts out a two-doll exclusive every year for the SDCC, and this year's was the father-daughter pair of Hexiciah and Robecca Steam.  I wasn't terribly interested in Robecca, so I split the set with another collector. As a result I can't do a review of the full set or the packaging, but I did think it would be fun to look at Hexiciah on his own.

Hexiciah is enormous - he shares his torso with Manny Taur, a 2014 SDCC exclusive - and these two are larger than both the standard Monster High male dolls as well as the mid-sized torso of Finnegan Wake. Despite his larger size, he has the usually excellent articulation of the line. He also has a unique head sculpt (complete with a epic moustache), and a very detailed mechanical arm.

He is dressed in a four piece outfit plus books and comes with four accessories: a hammer, a a screwdriver, a wrench and a tool belt.

Overall, I think this is a fantastically unique entry to the Monster High line. I love seeing non-standard bodies like these, and I think it's great that we're getting more adult characters.  I just wish it was more likely that we'd see a standard release of him!
A parting glance

  1. He is quite unique isn't he? I do like the body shape, it's so different from the other MH releases. If you didn't follow the series, you probably wouldn't even think he was from MH. I don't normally collect the MH guys myself but this one, if he was a standard release, I would definitely consider.

    1. That's true, he does stand out from most of the Monster High line, and not just because of his size. I really hope that they keep bringing out more unique dolls like this. :)

  2. Hi JS!
He reminds me a little of a Circus ringmaster who's gone Steampunk! Definitely an interesting character though and well detailed. Congrats on his arrival. :)

  3. Hello JS,
He is beautifully sculpted. The arm alone is incredible artistry, and I love his outfit.

    1. Thanks! The detail on the arm is fantastic, isn't it? I think that's the main reason I wanted to pick him up. :)

  4. He definitely has some nice details! But he takes broad-shouldered to new levels! :)

I wonder if EAH is going to produce any adults in its line. I bet Maddie's father the Mad Hatter would be a good seller.

    1. Oh, the Mad Hatter would be a neat one!

I think they've done at least one other adult - the headless headmistress, maybe?

    3. That's still Monster High, not Ever After High. :) We've seen lots of adults in the world of Ever After High, but none have been produced. I wonder how the SDCC marionette Cedar Wood sold this year?

    4. Heh, I have to confess that I don't always notice which is MH and which is EAH - they both seem so similar to me that I always get them confused!

I've seen those Cedar marionettes on ebay. A lot of them seem to be sitting around the $30 price point, which isn't too much of a markup so far. We'll see how that goes farther out though!

  5. I really like Hexiciah, but I wasn't able to get the dolls. I've always thought that Clawd should have been given a wider torso, more like Finnegan's, so he could look more like her cartoon version.

    1. That's true, Clawd does have a football player's body in the cartoons, doesn't he?

  8. My thoughts travelled to The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and then Steampunk! A very unique doll, congrats! :)
