Out of the Box: Cabbage Patch Kids "Taylor Audrey"

A few months ago I'd been thinking that I was wishing I'd brought one of my old (mid-1980s) Cabbage Patch Kids dolls back home with me after my last visit to my mother's place.  In a fit of nostalgia, I discovered the wide variety of sizes, constructions, and styles of new CPK that are now available.

A few casual searches later, and I found a listing for a "cowgirl" variation on sale. While the store listed her as being short-haired and dark-skinned, the doll that I received turned out to have long hair and the medium skin colour.  While someone looking for a look-a-like doll for a child would probably have been disappointed, that was ultimately a neutral for me since my main goal was just to see what one of these new P'tits Bouts De Choux (sorry, the Canadian in me couldn't help it) would be like.

Incidentally, while this doll has fibre rather than yarn hair, the original style yarn-haired dolls are still available. They seem to be about twice the price though!

In the box.

The back of the box.

The side of the box, which promotes the website
and the "Babyland General" home of the CPKs.
The inner packaging. The doll is dressed in a one-piece dress and
hard plastic boots.

The "adoption papers" that give the doll's name and a plastic key.
Maybe it's supposed to be the key to the doll's heart?

While the hair isn't too thickly rooted, compared to the bald-under-the-ponytail
heads of the 1980s dolls, this is a veritable forest!
.
Just for fun, I tried a pair of American Girl sized pyjamas on her.
Surprisingly, they fit almost perfectly. The legs are a bit too long for this
shorter body, but aside from that I think they suit her.

Overall I was fairly impressed with this doll. I should note that she was priced at $30USD, while many other Cabbage Patch Kids of the same size (but of different lines) were two to three times that price. So while I think she was certainly worth the price, I don't know that there would be enough added value to these dolls to go for one of the higher end ones.

Have you picked up a CPK lately?  Or do you have fond memories of the originals like I do? I'd love to hear about them either way!

  1. I only ever had one cabbage patch kid growing up. I honestly can't remember which one she was but she was one of my favourite dolls for a long time. I actually don't know what happened to her. I think my parents might have given her to a Charity store when we moved from one state to another. Actually did not know they still sold these dolls today. I've never seen any in our toy stores up here. Only My Little Pony and Care Bears.

    1. I hadn’t seen one for years before seeing a minature in a discount warehouse about six months ago. I’m not 100% sure, but I think they seem to mostly be sold online now.

  3. The Dancer got my childhood Cabbage Patch doll and her clothes. She did enjoy playing with the doll. Pretty sure the doll is still among her old toys somewhere.

    1. I love that you were able to pass yours along to your daughter! I feel like that’s the perfect direction for any play doll. :)

  4. My goodness, I had no idea they still made this doll!!! It's nice to know there is still an appeal for this type of doll.

  5. This is a little cutie! I remember the original dolls, but I wasn't into dolls then so I never bought one but I did like to look at all the different ones available, especially when we took our holidays in the US, as there always seemed to be so much more choice there than in the UK. Occasionally over the years I have thought about getting one on Ebay but so far I have resisted because I'm not a great lover of soft bodied dolls....which is also why I do not have an American Girl doll, although I've been very tempted to get one of those too!!!

    1. Heh, you have more self-control than I do! I regularly find myself thinking “We’ll, I don’t collect that type of doll, but just one can’t hurt...” I need to learn to be more like you. ;)

  6. I remember when these came to my little country. There was a cute one with red hair and she had green clothes and I was in love. I really wanted her, just as decoration on my bed together with the other soft toys I had. But that did not happen, sadly. Do not know why.
But you found a lovely one, she is so cute. Great that the American Girl doll clothes fitted! :)
