Random Toy of the Day: Mini AG Josefina

I didn't quite make it through all of the Minimates last week, so those posts will continue in a few days, but in the meantime I thought I'd quickly share a couple of photos of the newest addition to the doll posse: the mini version of American Girl's Josefina.

American Girl revamped their historical doll lines last year, and one of the changes was to change the style of their mini dolls from soft-bodied (like their larger counterparts) to full vinyl bodies.  Because of that, some of the in-stock older versions have been discounted, which is what tempted me to bring this end-of-line doll home.

I've talked about this line before, so I don't have a great deal to add at this point, but I am planning to pick up one of the new style minis next month (my niece will be visiting, and we have a trip to the local AG Place planned), so I'll be doing some comparisons at that point.

As for this particular doll, she appears to be a solid scaled-down version of the larger doll.

  1. She is sweet. Have you got any of the hard bodied dolls? What do you think of them if you have? I really don't like them as much as the original cloth bodied mini dolls that feel so much nicer in the hand. They seem to have 'giraffe' necks as well. Oh and the books have also been changed to tiny paper backs - no where near as good as the ones which came with the first mini dolls. Such a shame these cost cutting measures.

    1. I don't have any of the hard-bodied dolls right now, but I'm planning to pick one up within the next month or so.
I'm actually of two minds about the change - on the one hand, they do seem to be more cheaply made - but on the other hand, I think the more steamlined bodies make the outfits fall a little more attractively. Whether those things balance each other out though, I'm not certain. We'll see!

  2. She is really cute..I think she is my favorite historical character. I love the quality of the older versions and I'm curious to see your comparisons! I think it's cool that the face molds on the original minis are also different (ex. Josephine mold vs classic mold and Sonali mold) and I'm curious to see if the new mini's also follow that.

    1. I haven't heard if they've kept the different heads, so thanks for pointing that out! :) The different facemolds will definitely be something to watch for, you're right.

  3. She is quite sweet, and I love that she has a toothy smile! I have never seen this doll in real life, how tall is she?

    1. She does have a great smile, doesn't she? :)

These dolls are 16.5 cm/6.5", so they're designed to be proportionally the same relative to the 18"/46cm as the bigger dolls would be to a 8-10 year old girl.

  4. I love my mini AG dolls, as you know. I'm interested to see what you will think of the new dolls. I think it's too bad, as I don't know if the new dolls will go well with the old.

    1. We'll see! :) I'm hopeful that the differences won't be so stark that they'll look odd with the older dolls (because I'd like to be able to display them all together).

  5. Thanks for allowing a closeup look at Josephina. I also didn't realize the minis will now have all-vinyl bodies. Good news!

    1. The new bodies will certainly make the dolls fit in better with fashion dolls, and I know there are lots of people who like to use them in those settings, so this is perfect for them!
I think it'll help with clothes-sharing across other lines of the same height as well.

    1. Thanks! These little ones do have a charm all their own, don't they? I'm hopeful that the new ones will have held onto that. :)

  7. She looks very... huggable is the word, I guess. I could see a kid carrying her around or taking her on adventures.

    1. Heh, you're right! I think it's that slight puffiness that the plush bodies give them, maybe. :)
