DC Super Hero Girls Roller Derby Bumblebee

Being opened today is a playline doll from the Roller Derby release of the DC Superhero Girls by Mattel. This doll is the last of the three toys that I picked up at the Samko/Miko warehouse sale in Richmond Hill, ON last month.

I've talked about the action figure versions of the DC Superhero Girls before, but this is my first time picking up one of the fashion doll-type releases.  While the action figures are more in-line with my general tastes, the dolls do have a charm that I think can cross over between both fans of the figures and fans of playline fashion dolls.

The gimmick of the Roller Derby Roller Derby release is that each doll comes with a pair of rollerskates, a helmet, and a sportier version of their standard outfit.  In Bumbee's case this included moulded bright yellow socks, which limits the versatility of the doll but does mean that the socks won't droop with play (which does tend to be an issue with playline - and even some collector - dolls).

I remain charmed by the idea of the DC Super Hero Girls, but I don't know that I'll be picking up more of the dolls (as opposed to the action figures). That said, as a gift for a child, I think they're more than reasonable!

And that's it for today! I hope you've had a great November! I can't believe how close we are to the end of the year...

  1. My niece liked these dolls; her favorite was Wonder Woman. I don't know if she still plays with them. They're proof that Mattel can still do *something* decent, if it tries. Bumblebee's face sculpt is very nice.

    1. Heh, they definitely are a highlight among some other less-inspired lines! :)

  2. I didn't realise these were out. I haven't seen them in our stores but then I haven't really been looking. I only bought the original Wonder Woman and Harley Quinn from this series. The faces are nice, a bit child-like but they're supposed to be the younger versions of themselves I believe in the animated series of the same name.

Thanks for the review. I think it's cute they come with skates. Like you I won't be buying more of these girls either. I like them but not to own. I just have the two dolls as display dolls and nothing more. I treat them more like action figures but in doll form.

    1. I had never seen these in an actual store either before seeing these in the discount warehouse. They had some of the plush versions as well, which I was tempted by but passed on (if they'd had a Bumblebee plush I might have bought it though). :)

  3. This is my first time seeing this Bumblebee. She's nice. I love her muscular body. I agree that the molded-on socks will limit versatility for those with redressing in mind.

    1. Yes, one of the things I love about this line is how much more muscular they are than most playline fashion dolls. :)

  4. A very nice doll, indeed and review. Great with some muscles and joints that work, otherwise these kind of dolls can be rather stiff.
