Height Comparisons Across Doll and Figure Lines

Earlier this morning a co-worker asked me about the relative sizes of BJDs with American Girl dolls, and at almost the same time I read Vanessa's question about the size of MA's International Travel Friends relative to playline dolls over on Black Doll Collecting.  And since a couple of weeks ago I also received a PM on Den of Angels asking about Teen Trends to MSD comparisons, I decided that I've amassed enough comparison photos to warrant it's own post.

First up is the Travel Friends/Playline line-up:
Back Row (L-R): Disney Classics (Li Sheng), Barbie (Princess of South Africa), Monster High (Clawd Wolf)
Front Row: Bratz (Cameron), International Travel Friends (Namaste), American Girl Mini (Ivy)
 The AG comparison:

L-R: Iplehouse EID model body (Chase), American Girl Cécile,
Illusion Spirit mini (ZhuQing), Monster High (Jane Boolittle)
The Teen Trends comparison:
L-R: Volks SD13 Long-leg body (Irvin), Soom ID51 (London),
Illusion Spirit Mini (ZhuQing), Teen Trends (Deondra)
And finally, a larger one:
Back Row: Angelheim Elderheim Angelo, Volks SD13 Irvin, Souldoll Vito Rouse, American Girl Cécile
Row 2: Iplehouse JID Boris, Ellowyne Wilde Lizette, Monster High Clawd, Girls of Many Lands Neela, AG mini Samantha
Row 3: Sideshow Toys Krycek, Hot Toys Wolverine, PlayArts Commander Shepard, DC Direct Tali, Figma Yukiko Amagi
Front Row: Hasbro/Marvel's Greatest Battles Captain Britain, Star Wars Black Series Mace Windu, Heroclix Pete Wisdom

  1. An interesting comparison! And it's also a real pleasure to see some of your beautiful dolls together, you have a great collection!

  2. Thanks so much, jSarie for these comparisons. I, too, enjoyed seeing your beautiful collection. You have some really nice dolls there.

I think the Madame Alexander Travel Friends' heads will prevent them from working well with playscale models. I have since ordered Kenya but had no plans to use her as a family member for playscale dolls. I purchased because I think she's cute. I decided to buy from Amazon.com since I had money left on a gift card and the purchase also qualified for free shipping. I believe the final cost was $11 and change. She should be here soon.
    Thanks again!

PS There is a question for you on my post about the Travel Friends. Someone asked about an arm hinge.

    1. Thank you! :)

I'm glad the comparison was useful. I agree on the head sizes - although they might work alongside some of the big-headed dolls (the original Bratz, maybe?).

And I'm looking forward to seeing photos of your Kenya! :)

    2. I'll let you know if the hinge is functional and/or if the arms do more than rotate after Kenya arrives, too.

    3. Thanks! The more I look at the doll, the more I suspect that mine is just defective, so I should probably update my original post.

  4. You have an awesome collection. Thanks for showing the travel friends with other dolls. She is gorgeous, but I think a little too big to use with the 12" playscale dolls. I'm actually kind of glad. My wallet is now safe.

    1. Heh, I'm happy to have saved your wallet - more room for other dolls in that case, right? ;)

  5. I am fairly new to doll collecting so it was very interesting to see all of your different dolls. Your collection is fantastic! The travel friend dolls were very very cute, I so wanted to use them in playscale families.

    1. I'm glad you found it interesting! :)

I wonder if it might be possible to hybridize the travel friends heads onto a body that would give them proportions closer to standard fashion dolls?

  6. Dang, those BJDs are huge! Interesting that you have a Teen Trends doll. I think my next post is going to feature mine.

    1. Heh, they do tower over the others, don't they?

I really liked the Teen Trends line and thought it was a shame it was so short-lived. Looking forward to your post on them - Which one(s) do you have?

    2. I have Courtney. I've debated getting a friend for her, but I've just discovered that her legs are sticky and discolored her clothes, so now I'm not so sure.

    3. Oh, that's a shame! Maybe she'll be easy to clean up?

  7. Amazing collection. I like the vivid coloring of your dolls and action figures.

I like the last photo best. That Hot Toys Wolverine just pops ;-)

  9. So cool just to see them all! May I ask how you are storing them? Did you dress them for these photos or you leave them in their outfits?

    1. I actually have most of them out on display (I'm lucky enough to have a corridor that's wall-to-wall shelves), but the ones that are stored away (most of the smaller playline dolls) I generally keep dressed.

  10. Hello! It's possible to an American girl shoe fit in a msd doll? Thank you
