Out of the Box: Volks SD16 ebony Amethyst

I've mentioned that this doll was incoming a few times since the October FCS, but now she's finally made her grand entrance.

There was a little drama getting her back from the post office: I'd been out of town over the holidays, and when returned home I found a parcel pick-up slip from the post office. On the 30th I went over to pick her up and found that the location listed on the slip had been closed permanently as of the 29th. They listed a replacement address, so I went over there.  And that place  turned out to have a sign on its door saying it was closed until the new year for renovation, and listed the original, now permanently closed location, as its replacement. Luckily for me the new year was only a few days away, but still!

In any case, let's get on with the de-boxing!

The box.

Inside the box.

.
Within the pillows

.
There she is!

.
Free from the box and all dressed up.

.
With hair, eyes, and a more causal style.
But this wig wasn't quite right...

But before we switch her wigs, let's do a comparison with some older Volks dolls of similar resin colours:
In between SDGou Claude (2014 "shadow" skin) and SD13 Irvin (2008 ebony)
.
And here she is enjoying the outdoors in
a different wig. Maybe we'll keep this one:
What do you think?

And that's it! Thanks for following along!

  1. That situation with the post offices must have been stressful, poor you! But thank goodness she is safe and sound now! She's very beautiful, a gorgeous doll. I vote for keeping the curly dark wig, it looks great on her. Congratulations with this beauty :-).

The post office situation was almost unbelievable, but at least things worked out in the end! :)

  2. JSarie, I am glad you have got her. Amethyst is really beautiful with or without a wig.
The black wig is good on her but something tells me she would like to have a more unconventional but still stylish wig (Not the first one though, it was too edgy). Or am I just saying that because I would love to see more photos of her trying various wigs?
    Keep having fun!

    1. Thank you!

A wig-testing session sounds like a good idea - I think I'll make some time (and gather a selection of wigs) for that! :)

On the bright side, at least the post office drama gave me a story to share. ;)

  4. I like the last wig a lot but I would pull it back to show more forehead. That's the only thing that seems slightly off.

I have a personal question that you totally don't have to answer, BUT, do you cuddle or play act with these dolls? When I saw this doll I immediately wanted to hold her and pet her. Maybe make her some tea. Of course I stage my 1/6 dolls and give them lives to live, but I don't engage with them. A doll this size and other BJD seem like you can engage them more personally. Am I being creepy? Yea, probably, lol.

    1. That's a good point about pulling back the wig, I'll give that a go.

I always think there's something comforting about having one of these heavy dolls on my lap. It's almost the same feeling of holding a small or baby, but without worrying about being covered by fur or vomit afterwards. ;)

  5. I like the black curly wig too, but I agree with Muff that it does kind of hide her face.

    1. Maybe I'll try giving her a different hairstyle with that same wig, that might do the trick. :)

  6. Lol at Muff's comment! I totally pick up my dolls sometimes and cradle them, lol. It's totally creepy. I think anyone that doesn't collect dolls and sees that I have a bunch already thinks I'm weird. ;)
She's a beauty, Js! Gosh, she looks stunning even without the wig. She seems pretty substantial, weight-wise..is she heavy?

    1. She weighs around 3lbs/1.5kg. So not light (although she's lighter than my heaviest dolls, the Iple EIDs, who are almost twice her weight).

  7. How frustrating for you JS. The post in general is such a pain in the butt these days, but at least you have her now.

I love the colour of Amethyst's skin, it's gorgeous and as to the black wig ... I love the colour, love the curls, but perhaps too much hair for her beautiful face.

    Congratulations on receiving this beauty!
    Hugs,

I'm really pleased with how the colour/sculpt combination worked with her. :)

  8. What silly post offices! Hahaha :) but at least you finally got her, I adore her skintone ~ as tan is one of my fav. colors for BJDs x3 her face-up is also really pretty and the curly wig really suits her very well!

  9. You know, I've always thought that particular resin colour from Volks was such a lovely shade. I think I saw ... an Irvin in that colour and he looked gorgeous. I'm not too familiar with Volks sculpts so I think it was an Irvin!)

Congrats on the arrival but boy, what a way to get your doll having to trek from one post office to another! I'm glad it all worked out in the end though. Post offices are very frustrating at times.

    1. Thanks! And it's too true about the post offices. *sigh*

It was probably Irvin that you saw - outside of the FCS, the only other Volks sculpts that have come out in ebony (so far) are Ruby and Irvin.

  10. What a beautiful doll. I prefer the wig in the opening photo (and I love the T-shirt as well!) I can certainly understand the stress you must have felt trying to recuperate the doll. When our regular postal carrier is on vacation, I've had problems where there were no attempts to deliver, no notice and on the internet it was posted, "attempt to deliver-returned back to post office" even though I was home all day! Very frustrating. In any case, your doll eventually arrived and I'm sure you will have much fun with her.

I agree, that getting that "could not deliver" message when you've been home is one of my absolute pet peeves! Totally frustrating.

  11. I'm glad you were able to get your hands on her, I would have been having heart failure!
She's a lovely colour and I really like how her lips are painted, they look so natural. I agree that the first wig isn't 'her' but the second one is much better. Maybe you could run your fingers through the curls to soften them out if you wanted a more casual look? She's lovely anyway, a very nice tanned girl...and tans are always my favourite!

That's a good idea about finger-combing, I'll give that a few tries and see how it goes. :)

    1. Thanks! I'll have to try her in some more wigs just to test that theory. ;)
