Random Toy of the Day: Disney Classics Maleficent

When I picked up Li Shang (for my planned Jade Empire custom), there was a buy-on/get-one sale at The Disney Store, so this Maleficent doll came home with me as well.  I've always been fond of the character (somewhere - probably in storage - I have plush dolls of both the human and dragon version of the character), and I'd heard that these dolls were better articulated than most dolls in this price range, so I figured even if I didn't like her out-of-the-box look she'd still be a solid project base.

In the end I decided that I did like the doll as-is, even though the outfit is clearly that of a play doll. Even with the unfinished edges on her robe, the deep colours just make it appealing.

And of course there's a new movie about the character in cinemas now, so it's a timely character to share (I haven't seen the movie - I actually haven't seen any of the summer movies yet - but it's on my list).

  1. I don't remember when that doll was out. I remember there being a set that was the costume and a mask that any 11 1/2" doll could wear. I didn't get that one, but I did get the Fairy Godmother and Lady Tremaine sets from Cinderella.

    1. I hadn't realized that they'd put out costume sets - that's fabulous!

  2. One of my favorite characters as well. I have always been a fan of Disney's lady villains and she was perfection. And she said "hell" in the movie so I thought she was a bad ass as a kid. Is she articulated?

    1. I always felt the same way about the character!

This doll is articulated - ankles, knees, hips, shoulders, elbows, wrists and neck. The line is really quite nicely engineered (especially considering they retail for $10-$15).

  3. Looking forward to seeing the movie myself, Angelina was the perfect choice for the role! Great doll, haven't seen one here yet.
    Cheers,

    1. Thanks! I'm thinking I'll need a whole weekend to catch up on the summer movies at some point! :)

  4. Have you seen any of the new Maleficients, the ones based on Angelina Jolie? One of them has such sharp cheekbones, she looks like an alien creature. One of the Toys R Us Maleficients that is.

The Hot Toys Maleficient seems promising though.

    1. I've seen one of the movie-tie in dolls (the one the sell at the Disney Stores), and I thought there was something a little off about it - I couldn't pinpoint it at the time, but I bet you're right that it was the gaunt cheeks.

But that Hot Toys one will be brilliant! I've managed to resist picking up any of their figures so far, but the more photos I see, the more I feel my resistance wavering...
